Population

The Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 136,281 in 1970 to 207,130 in 2010. That was an increase of 52.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,472 in 1970 to 14,384 in 2010. That was an increase of 481.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.8 percent to 6.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 44.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the main factor adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. B-D continued to be the primary factor in adding population in all periods.
